Pen Fishing Rod

How many times have you driven past a lake or a pond and thought to yourself “Boy, I wish I had my fishing rod with me”. Well, the solution to the problem has arrived. It is called the pen fishing rod, and is literally a fishing rod that collapses to the size of a pen and fits in your pocket. Even the reel is miniscule and can fit in the same pocket, though it’s a little bulky.

While this sounds great, it is not really everything it is cracked up to be. First, there is the obvious need to carry tackle with you at all times to really ensure that you can go fishing at any time. While bobbers and line wouldn’t be hard to carry around in your pocket, I wouldn’t recommend you do the same with hooks and other lures, unless you have some sort of pain fetish. Perhaps you could wear a lure earring or something!

Another drawback to this is that you literally have to set up the pen fishing rod every time that you want to use it. First, you have to mount the reel, which isn’t so bad as it snaps right into place. You also have to string the line, add a hook and some kind of bait or lure. Still, these are things that you would have to do with a regular fishing rod should you break a line or something.

The biggest drawback to the pen fishing rod, though, is it’s relative strength. While the manufacturer claims that the rod is quite strong, it still doesn’t measure up for good, heavy duty fishing. The rod is made from an aluminum alloy that is strong enough for panfish and small trout and the like, but you will never haul in a monster bass with it. Like the advertisements say, It won’t catch a marlin, but it’s definitely ueable.

The reel is made from brass and is fully functional with clutch and drag settings and even the ability to switch from left-handed to right-handed. Due to it’s small size, though, the reel can only handle 5lb test string. Still another reason why you’ll never catch any big fish with the pen fishing rod.

In conclusion, the biggest advantage you will get from owning a pen fishing rod is the bragging rights. It’s just plain cool to be able to take a complete fishing rod and reel along with you anywhere you go. Just be sure you know what you’re getting and don’t expect the pen fishing rod to do what it isn’t designed to do.
